Founded in 1937, the National Museum of Fine Arts holds one of Latin America's most significant collections. Works by Portinari, Di Cavalcanti, and Victor Meirelles share space with European masters in high-ceilinged halls that once housed the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. The ground-floor sculpture gallery is breathtaking — classical pieces bathed in natural light from skylights above. This isn't an interactive or Instagram-friendly museum: it's pure contemplation, where each room reveals layers of Brazil's cultural DNA.
Arrive at opening on Thursday or Friday to avoid school groups. Budget at least 90 minutes to absorb the collection without rushing.
Inconsistent air conditioning and confusing signage — but the curation makes up for it. Admission is affordable, so worth every real.
